The Austin Bass Club was founded in September 1960.
Vice President: Tim Spencer Tournament Director: Dwayne Langston Secretary: Bobby Landes
Next meeting dates: May 3rd, June 7th (Meetings start at 7:30 pm)
The current members of the Austin Bass club are a competitive group of fisherman who enjoy competing with one another but they are also a pretty close knit of guys. That is one reason the club would like to get our families together to spend some time getting better acquainted. A decision on exactly what we will do will be discussed at the next meeting so if you’ve got any good suggestions be sure to bring them.
We had 5 teams fish the April tournament on Lake Limestone. The weather was pretty cooperative with only the typical 25-30 mph spring winds to cope with.
If you fished our Limestone tournament in the fall you probably ventured into this tournament expecting to find plenty of grass to fish. Well, guess again. The grass was nowhere to be found except for very small areas that held very small bits of very short grass. It was quite a surprise to those of us expecting to throw horn toads, buzz baits and chug bugs.
Nonetheless, Denis Parish and Bobby Landes found some grassless fish and led from start to finish and finished with 30.12 lbs. for first place. They caught their fish in shallow water primarily on flukes.
Second place was Ronnie Scott and Jim Sparks with 24.92 lbs. Their fish were caught mainly on brush hogs. Jim had big bass with a nice 5.26 pounder and his partner Ronnie finished with top individual honors with 16.26 lbs.
There were 10 fishermen that caught 35 fish for a total weight of 89.52 lbs. with an average of 2.56 lbs.
Although it was a small group of guys that fished this one, the camaraderie amongst those there was really enjoyable. Saturday night everyone that was there (except one team that had already eaten) went out and had dinner together and exchanged stories of their days’ experiences. As we sat around the dinner table enjoying each other’s company nobody really cared who was winning the tournament and who wasn’t. We were just enjoying friendships through the common denominator of fishing. Everyone likes to win and being competitive with one another is fine and dandy but it’s the friendships that develop with these same guys we compete with that are so much more important than winning the occasional tournament. That’s one of the things that seem to make the group of guys in this club so special. We were disappointed we didn’t have a better turnout for a two-day tournament but it was a good time for those that did make it.
Now it would have been an even better time if Dale Langston would have shared the only piece of coconut crème pie in the restaurant with the rest of us but that’s another story. Guess you’d have had to been there.

Recently there has been some concern about the accuracy of the weigh-in scales the club has been using. At times they have weighed slightly on the light side and sometimes they have indicated different weights while weighing the same stringer of fish. The decision was made to go back to using an older set of digital scales. Mike Shields currently has the scales and he will get them to Dale Langston to get them re-certified if necessary.
We had 3 guests at our last meeting with one of them being a second time visitor. The visitor’s name was Bob Giordano and he decided to join the ranks of the Austin Bass club. Let’s keep Bob in mind when we’re looking for a partner to fish with. Welcome aboard Bob, we’re glad to have you!
