The Austin Bass club voted to change the tournament date for October.  Previously, the date for October was the weekend of October 1st and/or 2nd.  The new date will be October 29th and 30th.  The lake voted in is Falcon.

Changing dates is not something that happens very often but there were several reasons for the change.  For one, there was unofficial conversation about going to Falcon in October.  There has been a lot of fish caught down there lately and October should be a good month.  It has a lot of water in it right now.  But there was a problem in that there were not any rooms available that weekend due to a major tournament.
Secondly, the October 1st/2nd weekend was a bit of a hardship for the guys fishing the TABC State tournament because of the number of tournaments in such a short period of time.  The club had it's August tournament on August 27th, the TABC State tournament is September 10th and 11th, the September club tournament is September 17th and then there was the two day tournament on October 1st and 2nd.  That's 4 tournaments in a period of 6 weekends.  By changing this date to the end of October it helps spread the dates out a bit which helps to make it a little more financially feasible and it puts it on a weekend when there are rooms available at Falcon.
It ought to be a good tournament and a good time and hopefully we can get a few more teams down there for this one with this change in date.  Rooms usually book up pretty quickly in the fall so make your reservations early.  For anyone wanting to stay at Beacon Lodge (which is where the weigh-in will be) the number is: 956-765-4616.
I wanted to get this information out as soon as possible in order to enable everyone to make plans.

Thanks,
Bobby Landes

We’re Going To Falcoooon in October!!!

The Austin Bass club voted in a return to Falcon for our October tournament and that was without the vote of local Falcon guide Jim Sparks, as he had to miss the meeting probably because he was already down there catch in’ ‘em.  Historically, October has been a good month on the almost full lake.  Jim has made several recent trips down south as of late and he reports excellent numbers of fish.

When I think of Falcon in October I can’t help but think of some of the best tournaments the Austin Bass club as ever had.  In 1989 the club went down there and caught 145 fish weighing an incredible 557 lbs. with 60 lbs. winning it.  Not to be outdone in 1993, it took a whopping weight of 71.74 lbs. to win it!  What a stringer!  It was quite a sight and one I’ll never forget.  In that tournament it took over 59 lbs. just to place fourth.  Wow!  And both of those tournaments were in the month of October.

Those were the good ol’ days but you never know when a repeat might be in order.  Lots of fish have been caught down there recently.  There is one thing about Falcon that makes it so unique.  As my Dad use to say, “with any cast you just might catch the biggest fish you’ve ever caught”!  And I did one time.  It was in October when I latched onto a 11.80 pounder that was indeed the biggest bass I’ve ever caught”.  It still stands as the O.P.E.C. Tournament Big Bass record.  You just never know when you might get lucky and I certainly did that day in October.  Needless to say October can be one of the best months of the year to fish down there.

Make your reservations now.  It ought to be a good one.  Beacon Lodge’s number is 956-765-4616.

September Tournament Results – Lake Buchanan

We had 8 teams fish the September tournament on Lake Buchanan and it was good to see a good turnout.  Even Scott Stagner make a showing and it was good to see him back again. Sean Ramsey and Keith Nichols finished first with 7 fish weighing 15.55 lbs.  Sean caught the anchor fish weighing 4.87 lbs. which was also big bass for the tournament.  It was also crucial as it put them ahead of the second place team by 2.41 lbs.  Second place was Bobby Landes and Denis Parish who had 7 fish weighing 13.14 lbs.  Denis had a big fish of 3.70 lbs. but it wasn’t enough to overcome Sean’s big fish.  Third was Jake Jakubowsky and Mike Campasso with 8 fish that weighed 12.30 lbs. They had the numbers just not the size.  It was good to Mike fishing again.  Besides winning first place and winning big bass, Sean also won the triple crown as he finished as top individual with 8.22 lbs.  There were a total of 16 fisherman catching 34 fish for a total of 61.37 lbs. for an average of 1.81 lbs. per fish.Congrats to all the winners!
